Description

Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man

The Vitruvian Man is a pen and ink drawing on paper (34.4 × 24.5 cm) by Leonardo da Vinci, kept in the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints of the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. A famous representation of the ideal proportions of the human body, it tries to demonstrate how it can be harmoniously inscribed in the two "perfect" figures of the circle, which symbolizes Heaven, divine perfection, and the square, which symbolizes the Earth. The choice of this geometry is not the result of chance, but of precise studies. The circle in fact represents the cosmos, the divine: the ancients believed that it was a symbol of perfection. In contrast is the square, symbol of the earthly world. Man would therefore represent the union between microcosm and macrocosm, therefore the very idea of the world. Bringing this vision back to Platonic, Aristotelian and Neoplatonic philosophy, man is considered the "mirror of the universe". He is the reflection of a higher order, which contains the elements that make up the whole world. The Vitruvian man is a symbol of Renaissance art, with it the proportions of the human body are analyzed according to the writings of the Roman architect Vitruvius. The artistic genius wanted to represent, in accordance with the period he lived, man as the "measure of all things"
