Marco Polo (Venice, 1254 – Venice, 8 January 1324) was an Italian ambassador, writer, traveler and merchant. His family belonged to the Venetian patriciate. Together with his father Niccolò and his uncle Matteo he traveled extensively in Asia along the Silk Road and crossing the entire Asian continent until he reached China (Cathai).
The chronicles of the journey and stay in the Far East were transcribed in Old French by Rustichello da Pisa during his imprisonment in Genoa; collected under the title of Divisiment dou monde (Devisement du monde), his travel memoirs later became known as "the Million".
