The sculptural group depicts the final farewell between the goddess Venus and Adonis. Canova depicts the two lovers while they are immersed in a moment of profound intimacy: the two seem to have lost direct contact with reality, they have parted lips and reclining faces and look sweetly into each other's eyes, ingredients with which the sculptor intends to bring into highlight their love idyll. Both are standing, and Venus is caressing Adonis' face, as if to hold him, leaning on him as if he were a pillar and languidly abandoning his head on her shoulders. Adonis, on the other hand, is characterized by an ephebic beauty, and is devoid of secure musculature (Canova, in this way, underlines his young age) and also places his left foot forward, as if to suggest a sensation of dynamism and the separation is now imminent. His expression is both sad and contemplative, as if he foreshadows the savage aggression that awaits him.
